Griezmann swaps Puma for Decathlon and plays in €80 boots

Antoine Griezmann had been the face of Puma for many years, playing in the brand's boots for 14 years.

However, he has now switched equipment and signed a deal with Decathlon.

In January, Decathlon announced the signing of Griezmann on a three-year contract, with financial terms estimated at several million euros. At first glance, this news might not seem particularly significant—the football footwear market is already crowded with lesser-known brands like Skechers and Mizuno. In the Premier League, you can even find players wearing Sokito boots, a niche brand that produces footwear from recycled materials.

However, Griezmann’s contract with Decathlon is actually a major deal. Here’s why.

Griezmann Plays in Affordable Boots—Unlike Top Brands’ Pricey Models

Decathlon’s football sub-brand is Kipsta. In October, Griezmann made his first appearance wearing Kipsta CLR boots, which cost just €65. After signing the contract, he switched to a slightly more expensive model—the CLR.Elite FG Jaguar Boost, priced at €80.

For comparison, elite-category boots from Nike and Adidas range from €250 to well over €300. Even with discounts, they rarely drop below €200. While major brands do offer more affordable models, they typically fall outside the elite category. These budget options often have soles designed for specific surfaces—artificial turf, natural grass, or multi-purpose use (the latter being more popular among amateur players).

Quality Isn’t Everything—Top Players Can Perform in Any Boots

Griezmann spent 14 years with Puma, but his move to Decathlon hasn’t affected his game. He remains one of Atlético Madrid’s best players, consistently scoring goals, providing assists, and stepping up in crucial moments.

So, do you really need to spend hundreds of euros on football boots to perform at the highest level? Griezmann’s choice suggests otherwise.
